FREE WILL AND DETERMINISM: A PHILOSOPHICAL DEBATE by Jimi B.E ( Inkfluencer ).

In the realm of philosophy, a timeless debate rages on between free will and determinism about which path is truly right.
Is our fate predetermined, or do we choose our way, behaviour and abilities?

Let's delve into philosophers school of thoughts. Freewill is the power of choice, advocates argue that we have the power to choose, to make decisions that shape our lives, and determine our muse. Jean-Paul Sartre, an existentialist, proclaimed that we are free, "To choose our path, and create our destiny." Free will emphasizes that our choices are our own as John locke posits.
"We are not bound by external forces, but by our own will, alone."
Although these scholars elude the biological and genetical factors that contribute to behavior which makes their argument defective. A subjective view states that free will has to do with moral responsibility as stated by Immanuel Kant, a rationalist, that moral responsibility required free will," for we must choose to act, and not be forced to be" but what about our genes?.

Determinism is seen as an inevitable course. It presents humans as vulnerable to predeterming factors beyond our control, such as genetics, environment, and fate.
Baruch Spinoza, a rationalist, believed that God or Nature governs all, and our actions are part of a larger, predetermined plan. David Hume, argued that our choices are caused by prior events, and that our decisions are the inevitable results of what has occurred, and what is meant. B.F. Skinner, a behaviorist, claimed that our behavior is shaped by external forces,
And that our choices are the result of conditioning and not free will's gentle course. Despite these two contradictory philosophies, there's a middle ground called Compatibilism which suggests,
That free will and determinism are not mutually exclusive but can coexist.
Daniel Dennett, a philosopher, argues that free will is compatible with determinism,
And that our choices may be influenced, but are not entirely predetermined, a nuanced whim.

CONCLUSION

The debate between free will and determinism remains unresolved,
A philosophical conundrum that continues to be explored, and evolved.
While some argue that our choices are free, others claim that they are predetermined,
Ultimately, the truth may lie in a nuanced middle ground, where both perspectives are gleaned.

  1. Indepth and concise. However, this raises more questions than proffer answers in the debate of Freewill vs Determinism. But isn't that what true philosophy, is to raise questions ?
